Alistair McLellan
Dr. Mark Newbold
After qualifying in Medicine at Birmingham University in 1983, I trained in Histopathology. I had an academic training, completing a research doctorate in renal pathology in 1990, and then worked as an NHS consultant in Warwick Hospital and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire. Latterly I specialised in bowel cancer and became pathology lead for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme pilot.
Following a variety of clinical management roles I became Managing Director of St Cross Hospital in Rugby, my first Board level role. During that time I led an Acute Services Review in Coventry and Warwickshire, and in 2007 I joined the first cohort of the new West Midlands Aspiring Chief Executive Programme.
In Sept 2007, I moved to Kettering General Hospital as Chief Executive, giving up my clinical career after 24 years as a doctor. After a rigorous quality improvement programme KGH achieved Foundation Trust status in November 2008. In August 2010 I moved back across the midlands to take on the role of Chief Executive of Heart of England Foundation Trust, the largest acute Trust in the West Midlands region.
My particular interests are the future configuration of district hospitals, local stakeholder and public engagement, and the development of medical leadership.
